First, I will discuss recent developments in the field of oxide heterostructures, and present our proposal to realize half-metallic Chern bands and a high Tc quantized anomalous Hall effect in mixed 3d/5d oxides. A key component of this proposal involves an orbital analogue of the Rashba effect which may have broader implications in orbitally degenerate oxides. Second, motivated by the interest in understanding correlation effects in Chern bands, I will discuss how the Mott regime of models such as the spinful Haldane-Hubbard Hamiltonian can realize skyrmion crystals with non-coplanar magnetism. We argue that quantum melting of such spin crystals provides a distinct physical route to realizing chiral spin liquids, and illustrate this idea with numerical results on a variety of lattices.
